Welcome to the plein air paintings of John Francis Murray.

The name ‘sowsearsilk’ comes from an old saying that ‘you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear’. But the goal of art is to create transformations like this, when a work ceases to be the things that created it but becomes instead the things it intended to describe, then it has achieved something.

I hope whilst viewing these images that occasionally you might lose the feeling of looking at the marks on a page and instead have a stronger feeling of viewing a place.
